I know you’re sceptical of evolutionary psychology, but I think you’d gain a lot from ‘The Ape That Understood the Universe’ by Steve Stewart-Williams. He demonstrates that to say a species nature is primarily determined by its survival requirements is an over-simplification. More precisely it’s determined by its ability to propagate its DNA. Survival is usually consistent with that, but not exclusively, and sometimes not at all. This has important ramifications for our nature, including the differences between the genders. Ayn Rand sensed that on some level, coming through implicitly in her novels, and sometimes explicitly (About a Woman President). I think if she were alive today she’d be largely in agreement with recent advancements in this space.
