Viva la Revolución
A few weeks ago, the simmering conflict in Venezuela reached a crisis point when Interim President Juan Guaido called for the Venezuelan military to join him in overthrowing socialist dictator Nicolas Maduro. The prospect of an immediate uprising fizzled, so the conflict has settled in for the long haul.
It's not over, and just this weekend, a Venezuelan Air Force general released a video calling for the Venezuelan people and the military to "rise up" against Maduro. On the other hand, "Officers who have disavowed Maduro have fled the country, and the military top brass—most notably those who command troops—continues to recognize Maduro."
Whatever happens in Venezuela, this conflict has once again provided some excellent reminders about where activists on the American left—all those "Progressives" and "democratic" socialists—really stand.
