There are two big news stories in the last few weeks. One involves the use of the US military against Iran, the other its use against the city of Los Angeles.

I think the story about Los Angeles will turn out to be more important, but as you will see, there is a connection between the two. For today, I just want to get caught up on what is happening (and not happening) in our quasi-war with Iran.


The Generators of War

It’s necessary to set a larger and longer context for this, because a lot of the commentary you hear right now is filtered through the pro-Trump versus anti-Trump partisanship of the moment. That’s not entirely irrelevant, but it tends to focus people’s attention narrowly and cause them to miss a long story that goes back decades. And as I warned, it is causing some people to negatively polarize themselves into defending the Iranian regime, which is a very big mistake.

The main context here is that the Islamic Republic of Iran has been a menace since its founding in 1979. The regime was founded as a religious dictatorship based on a truly insane theology whose central idea is an apocalyptic religious war.
