Great analysis. I also like the Anatomy of a Murder reference. :-)

"Unconquerable compulsion"? I wasn't even thinking of that. Actually, I just looked it up, and in the film it was "irresistible impulse." Heck, I'm just gonna go edit the piece to put that in.

BTW, I didn't particularly care for that film--but I have the Duke Ellington soundtrack, which is terrific.

LOL, as usual, you're thinking at a higher level than I was. :-) That's hilarious that "irresistible impulse" from Anatomy is relevant to your post.

I was referring to the line "I may just be a simple country lawyer..." (struck through). I guess I have to work on the objectivity of my communication. :-)

The funny thing is that I muffed it in my head. I think I was transposing Gregory Peck in To Kill a Mockingbird into Jimmy Stewart in Anatomy of a Murder. My poor old brain. :-) (And, yes, To Kill A Mockingbird is a far superior movie.)

OK, so I might seem a bit obsessive about this, but tracking down the origin of quotes and figures of speech is a bit of a hobby of mine. If I'm going to use these things, I want to know where they came from and what their original context was.

So according to TV Tropes, the origin of "Simple Country Lawyer" was actually in politics!

"The Trope Namer is Sam J. Ervin, a Democratic senator from North Carolina, who was fond of using this phrase when he was part of the team to investigate whether Republican senator Joseph McCarthy should be censured by the Senate, and later in his career when he served on the Senate Watergate Committee."

They then trace it through both Jimmy Stewart in "Anatomy of a Murder" and Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch but say that most people get it from Andy Griffith's Matlock (which is what I had in mind).

And at the risk of being even more pedantic, in "Anatomy of a Murder," Jimmy Stewart says "humble country lawyer." I found the clip.

Wow. That's really interesting info. I love the development of memes and quotes over time, too.

I've never watched Matlock.

I'm actually proud of my poor old brain for remembering Jimmy Stewart saying something close to what I thought he said. :-)

"Simply put, Donald Trump won last November partly because many people did not know or did not believe what was actually happening in the world and what Trump was promising to do....

...He tends to become popular with the American public only for very short periods of time and only by a small margin—but two times now, that very short period has happened right at an election...."

Perhaps I speak only for myself but I don't think so. I think many people were well aware of what was actually happening in the world last November. And although Trump was much more of a wild card in November 2016, I think many people were well aware of what was actually happening in the world at that time, too. It continues to baffle me that you underestimate / gloss over / refuse to acknowledge just how awful the Democrats / Leftists / Collectivists were (and are) and how many Americans simply refused to vote for Hilary or Biden / Harris because they represent a party that is largely anti-American, rotten to the core and don't want to see the country on that path anymore. We could all see the near total takeover of MSM, cultural bullying and influence, destruction and indoctrination of education (universities a long time ago but all the way down with acceleration to K-12 with Obama), the behind the scenes sinister actions of supressing Free Speech (particularly during Covid and the strong-arming of social media) and then 4 years of blatantly trying to hide that Biden was mentally incapable of being POTUS (who WAS in charge?). That Trump has become popular at election time twice now shouldn't be a surprise given the hideousness of the entire D party when it comes time to choose continuation or a break. Even after Trump was considered dead and buried after mid-terms in 2022, he still came back to be the R candidate. Does that not tell you something about how much the Ds are disliked - and for good reasons?

I don't like Trump and I didn't vote for him in 2016 or in 2024 (but neither did I vote for Hilary or Harris - they were all horrible candidates). Interestingly, though, even though I wasn't happy that Trump had won, I was relieved after both elections to know that the Democrats had lost.

I am in my own circles vocally critical of many things Trump is doing. I am also willing to acknowledge several things he is doing which I very much support. I still don't have anything positive to say about the Ds (especially given they endorse candidates like Mamdani / Wilson in Seattle and some other horrifying individuals). Although I have fears about Vance, I do hope that other and better voices will become stronger once Trump is gone. I don't see any reason to think that the Democrats will veer from their collectivist course - they, I suspect, are likely to go even harder in that direction given the evidence.

To the Village Idiwitt, simply put, Donald Trump won last November because the Democrats did not run the best man…or woman for President of the United States…but the powers that be in the very epistemological faculty lounge chose Selina Meyer in the flesh…based purely on race, gender and upper class luxury beliefs…and the determinative, middle of the road, swinger voter, tilted moderately right…handing back the Presidency to the abominable Heat Miser pictured above…as The Don’s exasperation above is because he can’t stand not being the center of attention, as he so easily ripped the Parable of the Good Samaritan out of his own fools gold emblazoned Trump Bible.

But I don’t want to shatter any of your Trump illusions…as you engage in a little bit too much schadenfreude for the G.O.P. Crashers “blowout” loses…like those two pure racialists epistecosmology I just put myself through listening to with the happy coward and warrior Frenchie, conservative cover boy over at the New York Times Opinion. The Don was not on the ballot anymore…than we the people should all be celebrating the monster, I mean mobster, Trump just getting thrown in The Pen…which, speaking of Armageddon (how this fellow worshipper, I mean Trekkie nerd does love your counter Christian culture references to a mythical future without Jesus, I mean religion) Time (hat tip, Joe Strummer…who, struck it rich in popularity like that Zohran Mancommie…producing musak to their fanatics ears…like a lot of people won’t get supper tonight)…welcome to the United Front should be nothing about being on the left, but doing what’s right…Resistance is not futile, it is one’s moral duty to see a literal Psycho Killer Trump and his willing executioners N.I.C.E., N.I.C.E. baby baboons crimes against humanity answered for…Can I get a witness for this is Radio Clash, I mean Chaos at least shoving a mic in The Dons ugly Orangeman face Robert…what are you afraid of, you might get cancelled by the Dick Tator in act one. Ashli Babbitt still cannot be reached for comment. Please take your show down the road, I need a hero, as I lament where all the Republican cowboys have gone. Make it so. Gotta run on. an improper epistemology is always at the root of every problem, but especially so recently. It is nice to read a little optimism about our wannabe dictator's eventual comeuppance. I hope there continues to be more and more reasons for it.
