Salon of the Refused, Episode 7

Episode 7 of my video and podcast series, Salon of the Refused, is now available.

I talk with an old friend, Bob Garmong, who spent most of the past decade as a lecturer at Dongbei University of Finance and Economics in Dalian, China, about his experiences there and the prospects for the country's future. The conversation includes: why China turned against liberalism, whether it is really as powerful as Western observers hope or fear, how Communism in China was different from Stalinism, why Tom Friedman doesn't see the real China, how to pronounce "Xi Jinping" without sounding like you're ordering the chicken, and the one quality Bob thinks is mostly likely to save the country from a slide back into totalitarianism. I've followed events in China pretty closely, but this interview brought out some interesting perspectives that I hadn't heard before.
