I’ve got a new piece up at Discourse in defense of “workism.” It is a bit of a pejorative term—a less tendentious form of “workaholic”—meant to target the idea that work is not merely a regrettable necessity of life but is actually a source of personal meaning and aspiration.
An apt commentary for the day the hardest worker in the history of sport, Tom Brady, decides to retire. Brady is a tremendous role model for the kind of life you are advocating. And though he played a warlike game he is far more like Hesiod in the joy and life-affirming values he displayed for 22 years. He is a true hero, and I'm not even a Patriots or Buccaneers fan.
