Authoritarian Blindness
The Chinese regime has spent decades building up a careful system of controls intended to suppress all political criticism and create the illusion of a contented populace. The leaders of the regime clearly believe this illusion, because Xi Jinping has been consolidating a Mao-style dictatorship: permanent one-man rule with a cult of personality (for a man with no discernible personality).
But it is all an illusion, and the weekend’s protests drew back the curtain.
