I can only say that the "Left" the collectivists, started this long ago. the Democratic party nudged it along with grants, handouts, direct funds to the "upper education establishments" and the "right" simply took what they started and used it for their own ends. The Democrats have continuously passed powers to the executive branch which never should have been done and now Trump uses that power that suddenly isn't proper government operations anymore. "It's ok if the Democrats pass on the power to the Democratic executive", but "A Threat to Democracy" when the right uses the same powers for their own destruction.
I don't at all agree with the government monitoring and overreach propositions on the table that could turn into thought police. They should, rightly, be highlighted and challenged.
BUT:
1. There is a real need to tackle the multi-decade (but accelerated in the last 2) hard takeover by the "woke" (just look at DEI staffing numbers!) and utter abandonment of defending intellectual freedom by university administrations along with the Left in government. The double standards of cancelling and firing those who chose to question DEI / Climate Change and certain racial or ethnic groups but turning a blind eye to (and encouraging) blatant violent anti-semitism and legal (until recently) discrimination against Asian students are appalling.
2. The vast majority out there either remained silent to even cheered on such things yet are now screaming bloody murder when Trump addresses the issues. (There are some who did crusade against what was happening but even they seem to think that what Trump is doing is an end to Democracy but what had been happening before is somehow much better?) By all means, challenge the legality and highlight problems but where is the context? As you point out, why is it only now that there is this level of concern? Where were you for the last 20 years?
3. Amongst all the screaming and "The End is Nigh!" proclamations, where are the constructive propositions for alternatives? Challenging Trump is fine - but the problems on campus are real and what are your proposed solutions?
I'm surprised you didn't mention Alan Garber. My impression from his WSJ interview is that he is standing right up to Trump's challenge. Did I miss something here?
REMEMBERASHLIBABBITT The young looney tune suffered a premature death by crook, line and sinker for a complete fing BIG LIE uttered over and over and over again by a shameless, mendacious, narcissistic, megalomaniac, crony capitalist pig, casino card shark magnate, FTX, I mean NFT huckster, serial adulterer, reality tv porn star, GOP Crasher, formerly the world’s biggest twitter troll, and Americas Now Biggest Sore Loser. Calgon take him away. Ashli Babbitt still cannot be reached for comment
From memory, damn near verbatim, “User PERMANENTLY BANNED” by your comrade Berney, free speech for me, not thee over at the laughably called The UnPopulist…posted in response to one of your crew collar wearing pseudo intellectual weaklings laments about how Donald J Trump, or in my words, The Don, Ill Duce wannabe meets Tony Soprano in the flesh. I get what your comrade does not care, nor actually get, my perverse sense a humor about someone the both of you lament will be a dictator for a thousand years, I mean from day one….the difference between me and you and Berney and Shaka Kan or whatever that insufferable bores real name is…is I would say yo the POSPUTUS face, you know, the one you keep calling Hit Lee, I mean a authoritarian…I would say to his face he is simply the luckiest man to be alive….and I am not talking about that stupid kid who just missed, but his getting to face off in the oval ballot box against the worst woman for the job, not once (think clash Sandinistas), but TWICE. God help U..S. Resistance is not futile ( like your pencil neck geeks style) but one’s moral duty. Grow a sack Robert, ditch the sweater and tell your pussy friends words are not the answer. Mike Dial missed his own point…drive from FarmVille to D.C. and do as I would Robert. The Don might be scared straight for once. Gotta run on. Thanks for taking my rant for now R.T. Peace through superior mental firepower
Me thinks not. But I did say trigger warning. I do endeavor to make one think a second time, and even better, make you laugh. I have utterly failed with firing your synapses when it comes to the former. Leave aside the import that Ashli Babbitt is still dead because of a former Presidents pathological lie, he is President once again because those in a position to confront him with the truth of who and what he is (tell me one thing I said in this rant Mike is not true of the wannabe dick tator). It is ironic to me how you share Robert’s sentiments of our current POTUS, but, like the little dweeb over at the UnPopulist, you react in horror when puts in writing what I would say to our current POTUS face if I could: Donald J Trump you are simply the luckiest man to be alive, but to Witt, you are not worthy of life, liberty or the pursuit of happiness…and should be stuck in a six, by six, by six cement block for the rest of your misspent life, with bars for a window and door, and that golden toilet seat of yours would double for your sink, and the only reading material would be allowed is your autographed copy of your Trump Bible. Lock him up. Can I get a witness. Again, not that you seem to get, let alone care anymore than the 100’s of people and sicko fans in Washington who have sold their immortal souls out to the Devil Incarnate (yes, Donald Trump is an evil, rich white trash salesman), Ashli Babbitt still cannot be reached for comment ( hat tip, James Taranto…who, like me, never forgot or would forgive Senator [finally] Dead Kennedy for running home to his rich daddy while someone suffocated to…History does indeed rhyme, and We the Living in Idiocracy. Gotta run on. Thanks for taking my rant Mike. Here’s hoping someone aims a heavily loaded verbal gun at The Don and he has a fing stroke. Forgive me Jesus but you know he is destined to be six thousand feet under with other deplorables. Peace through superior mental firepower

I have similar issues to what you have written.
